Trusting God’s Provision in Every Season

Hello friends! This year hasn’t looked like what we expected. Like many families, we’ve faced some hard shifts—a layoff, a downsizing move, and big changes in how we homeschool and live day to day. And yet, through it all, God has continued to provide. Not always in the ways we hoped for. Not always on our timeline. But always, always, enough.

Homesteading has taught us to look at life through the lens of seasons—some are full of growth and abundance, while others are quiet, slow, even painful. But God is present in all of them. His provision may not always come in bushels or bonuses, but it comes. In relationships, in small answered prayers, in peace that surpasses understanding.

As we close out this season of thanksgiving, here are a few reflections on what it means to trust God’s provision—even when things don’t go according to plan.

1. Provision Looks Different in Every Season

When my husband was laid off and we had to move into a smaller home, I wondered how it would all work out. But God opened doors we didn’t see coming.

  • Our oldest daughter found a job nearby and is learning the value of responsibility.
  • Our two sports-loving kids were placed on excellent soccer teams where they’re growing both athletically and personally.
  • Our introverted youngest daughter is excelling in her art and is at peace taking care of the dogs.
  • Our youngest, who was struggling in our homeschool setting, now attends a school that is meeting his needs beautifully.

Lesson learned: Provision doesn’t always look like comfort. Sometimes it looks like change, stretching, and unexpected answers. But God is always working.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

2. Small Things Still Count

When you’re used to storing up jars of applesauce or planning out garden beds, downsizing can feel discouraging. But I’ve learned that provision isn’t always about more.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • A neighbor bringing over a dessert
  • A few quiet hours to rest
  • Kids who pitch in without being asked
  • The last jar of broth on a cold night

Encouragement: Don’t overlook the small. The manna in the wilderness came one day at a time.

3. God’s Timing > My Timeline

I like plans. I like to know what’s coming. But this year reminded me that trust means releasing control. Provision often shows up just in time.

  • Just when we weren’t sure about sports, the perfect teams were offered.
  • Just when we were praying about schooling, a local door opened.
  • Just when we were feeling discouraged, God provided a path forward.

It wasn’t always early. It was always right.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” – Psalm 23:1

4. Provision Isn’t Just Material

When we talk about provision, it’s easy to focus on money or food. But some of the most important things God has provided this year can’t be stored in a pantry.

  • Clarity in decision-making
  • Peace in the middle of change
  • Strength for hard conversations
  • Joy in unexpected places
  • A home when he had to move

Reflection: God’s provision is ultimately about His presence. That’s what carries us through.

5. The Homestead Still Preaches

Even in a smaller home with fewer animals or less garden space, the rhythms of homesteading keep teaching us to trust. Seeds still grow. Herbs still dry. Meals are still shared around a table. God is still good.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” – Romans 8:32

The Enoughness of God

Trusting God’s provision doesn’t mean life will always feel secure or abundant. But it means we believe He is who He says He is—a good Shepherd, a faithful Father, and the Giver of every good gift.

As we enter winter and close out the year, I’m learning to say: Thank You for what You gave, and thank You for what You withheld. Thank You for every open door and every closed one too.

Wherever you find yourself right now—in abundance or uncertainty—I pray you’ll experience the quiet peace that comes from trusting the One who provides in every season.
