Hello, friends! As a homesteader, I spend a lot of time outside. Every year, I’m reminded of how beautifully God’s design is reflected in the world around us. Each season has its own unique character, challenges, and gifts.

I’ve found that by paying attention to the seasons, I can better understand God’s work in my life. There are times of planting and growth, seasons of harvest and rest, and even times of pruning and letting go. Today, I’d love to share some reflections on how the seasons of nature mirror spiritual seasons, and how we can embrace God’s design through it all.
1. Spring: God’s Design for New Beginnings and Growth

Spring is one of my favorite seasons on the homestead. After the quiet stillness of winter, spring arrives with a burst of life, energy, and new beginnings. The garden starts to bloom, the trees bud with fresh leaves, and the animals seem to come alive with new vigor. Spring is a season of growth, renewal, and planting—and I believe it mirrors the times in our lives when God calls us to step into something new.
Spiritual Lessons from Spring:

- New Beginnings: Just as the earth awakens in spring, God’s design brings us into new seasons of life to grow and start fresh. This might be a new job, a new relationship, or a new chapter in your spiritual journey. Spring reminds us that no matter how long or hard the winter has been, God is always at work, preparing us for new beginnings.
- Planting Seeds of Faith: Spring is also a time for planting, both in the garden and in our hearts. Just as we plant seeds in the soil, we plant seeds of faith, hope, and love in our lives. This is a time for nurturing our relationship with God, spending time in prayer, and cultivating new habits that help us grow spiritually. In Galatians 6:9, we’re reminded to not grow weary in doing good, for in due time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Embracing Spring in Our Lives

- In this season, focus on cultivating the new things God is bringing into your life. Whether it’s starting a new project, deepening your prayer life, or building new relationships, trust that God is with you as you grow and explore new opportunities.
- Take time to reflect on the seeds of faith you’re planting, and remember that growth takes time and patience.
2. Summer: God’s Design for Abundance and Hard Work

Summer is a busy season on the homestead. The days are long, the garden is in full swing, and there’s plenty of work to be done. But summer is also a season of abundance, when we begin to see the fruits of our labor. The garden is lush and full of life, and there’s a sense of joy and satisfaction in seeing things grow.
In God’s design, summer represents those times in life when we experience abundance and blessings. It’s a season of hard work but also of joy and fulfillment. God’s design of provision is evident. We can see the fruits of our faith and efforts.
Spiritual Lessons from Summer

- Abundance and Blessing: Summer reminds us of the abundance in God’s design. Just as the garden overflows with produce, we experience seasons in our lives where we see the fruits of our labor—whether in our work, our relationships, or our spiritual growth. It’s a time to thank God for His provision and to enjoy the good things He has given us.
- Hard Work and Stewardship: While summer is a time of abundance, it’s also a season of hard work. The garden doesn’t maintain itself, and neither do our spiritual lives. We are called to be good stewards of the gifts God has given us. In Colossians 3:23, we’re reminded, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Summer teaches us the importance of diligence and faithful stewardship.

- In this season, focus on gratitude and hard work. Take time to thank God for the blessings in your life and for the ways He is working through you. It’s also important to remember that the summer of our spiritual lives can be a time of intense effort. Be diligent in your responsibilities, whether in your career, family, or faith, and know that your efforts are bearing fruit.
3. Autumn: God’s Design for Harvest and Reflection

Autumn is such a beautiful season, isn’t it? The air turns crisp, the leaves change colors, and there’s a sense of completion as the garden yields its final harvest. On the homestead, autumn is a time to gather the fruits of the garden, preserve the harvest, and prepare for the colder months ahead. It’s also a season of reflection—a time to look back on what we’ve accomplished and to thank God for His faithfulness.
In our spiritual lives, autumn represents a time of harvest and preparation. It’s a season when we can look back and see how God has been at work, bringing about growth and transformation. Autumn reminds give thanks but also prepare for winter.
Spiritual Lessons from Autumn

- The Harvest of Our Faith: Just as we harvest the fruits of the garden, we experience spiritual harvests in our lives. This could be the fulfillment of a long-awaited prayer, the growth of a new relationship, or a deeper understanding of God’s love. Autumn reminds us that God is faithful to bring about a harvest in due time (Galatians 6:9). It’s a time to celebrate the ways God has been at work in our lives.
- Reflection and Gratitude: Autumn also invites us to reflect on the past season and to give thanks for the journey. It’s important to take time to look back on how far we’ve come and to recognize God’s hand in it all. Psalm 9:1 says, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” Reflection and gratitude are key themes of the fall season.
Embracing Autumn in Our Lives

- Use this season to reflect on the blessings and lessons of the past. Take time to give thanks to God for His faithfulness and for the harvest He has brought into your life. Autumn is also a time to prepare for what’s next—whether that’s resting, planning, or taking on new challenges. Trust that God is guiding and preparing you into the next season.
4. Winter: God’s Design For Rest and Trust

Winter on the homestead is a quiet, still season. The garden rests, the animals slow down, and the earth seems to take a deep breath. While there may be less to do on the surface, winter is an important time of preparation and restoration. It’s a season of rest, where the soil is replenished, and the seeds of the next season begin to take root.
In God’s design, winter can represent those times in our lives when things feel slow or dormant. It might be a time when we don’t see much growth, or when we’re waiting for God to move in a certain area. But just like in nature, winter is a vital season of rest, trust, and preparation for what’s to come.
Spiritual Lessons from Winter

- Rest and Renewal: Winter teaches us the importance of rest. Just as the garden needs time to replenish, so do we. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Winter is a time to slow down, trust in God’s provision, and allow Him to restore our hearts and minds.
- Trusting God in the Quiet Seasons: Sometimes winter can feel like a season of waiting—whether you’re waiting for an answer to prayer, for direction, or for a new opportunity. But just as the seeds lie dormant under the snow, God is at work even when we don’t see it. Winter teaches us to trust in God’s timing and to be patient as He prepares us for the next season.

- In this season, focus on rest and trust. Use this time to draw closer to God, to rest in His presence, and to trust that He is working in the unseen areas of your life. Winter may feel quiet, but it’s a time of deep growth beneath the surface.
Embracing God’s Design

Just as the earth moves through cycles of growth, abundance, harvest, and rest, so do we in our spiritual journey. Each season—spring, summer, fall, and winter—has its own purpose and lessons to teach us.
Whichever season you find yourself in right now, embrace God’s design. His will bring about growth and transformation.
