Frugal Living: Summer on the Homestead

Hello Friends! Welcome to another week of Frugal Living Friday – Summer Edition.

This summer our kids are off from school, soccer practice, and music lessons. We are enjoying a rest from the crazy school year with some free or cheap ideas. Here are a few frugal living activities we are doing this summer to hopefully spark some ideas to make your summer special and frugal.

Vacation Bible School

Our youngest son attended a Vacation Bible School this past week which our church puts on every summer. It’s free to attend making it a very frugal activity! It’s great for him to spend time with his friends learning about the Bible, something important to our family culture.

I also benefit from the free time and can accomplish some projects around the house that have been neglected. Many churches offer vacation bible schools and you don’t need to attend the church to attend VBS. It may be something to look into for your elementary age children to attend or your older children to volunteer.

Frugal Living: Homemade Ice Cream Sundaes

Our family loves us some ice cream in the summer. However, going out for just ice cream has cost us nearly $60 – just for ice cream for a family of 6. Instead we have been buying ice cream and toppings when they’re on sale at the grocery store. We store them away for Friday night dessert nights.

Early Morning Walks

You know what else if free? Nature.

I have been working in the early morning hours before the temperature rise and I’m ready to hide in the air conditioned homestead. I find the morning walks clear my mind of the cluttered thoughts and prepares me for another day.

Daily walks has allowed me to discontinue a gym membership eliminating a monthly expense.

Resting in nature

Frugal Living: Rest

Summer is a time of rest for my children so many mornings they wake up when their bodies wake up. No alarms! We have three teenagers who are physically growing and need more rest than the school year often allows. Summer is a time of rest- luxury for many.

Books

Our family loves to read.

We don’t always have time to sit with a book and read for enjoyment during the school year. Summer is the perfect time to visit the library and bring home a stack of books -again all FREE.

The public library system is a wonderfully under utilized resource of free books, DVDs, puzzles, and classes. I could do a whole post on all the benefits of the library system.

More Thoughts on Frugal Living

I hope these ideas spark some frugal living ideas you can incorporate into your summer plans.
