Frugal Living Friday: 7 Ways to Simplify Your Life and Save Money

Hello friends, and welcome back to another Frugal Living Friday here at ASW Homestead!

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I love all things simple, homemade, and meaningful. But simple doesn’t mean boring—and it certainly doesn’t mean doing without. In fact, one of the most powerful ways we’ve found to live abundantly as a family is by slowing down, doing less, and making more intentional choices—especially when it comes to our time and money.

If you’re looking for practical ways to cut expenses, reduce clutter, and enjoy life more, you’re in the right place. Here are 7 easy ways to simplify your life and save money, all of which we’ve tried (and loved) on our homestead.

1. Buy Durable, Not Disposable

Disposable items are everywhere—razors, diapers, cleaning wipes, cheap gadgets. But over time, these “conveniences” cost a lot. Investing in quality, long-lasting items means you save money in the long run and reduce your household waste. Look around your home and ask: What am I constantly throwing away and replacing? Chances are, there’s a better option.

2. Let Go of Style-Driven Spending

Does your car still run well? Do your jeans still fit? Then you don’t need to upgrade just because a new model or fashion came out. Choosing what works for you—instead of trying to impress others—brings a peace and freedom that money can’t buy. Embrace practicality, and you’ll be amazed at how content you feel.

3. Reuse, Recycle, and Reimagine

Recycling isn’t just about the bin—it’s a mindset. Sell what you no longer need, donate to others, and get creative with what you already have. Old clothes can become rags, rugs, or quilts. Pretty paper scraps can turn into homemade gift wrap. Before you toss it, ask yourself, Can I give this a second life?

4. Grow Your Own Food

A backyard garden—even a few pots on a patio—can transform the way your family eats. Homegrown produce tastes better, costs less, and keeps you connected to the seasons. Kids love planting, picking, and playing in the dirt. Bonus: fewer grocery trips and fresher meals on the table!

5. Be Energy Smart

Little changes add up. Shorter showers save water and time. Switching to energy-efficient bulbs cuts your power bill. Layering up in cooler months instead of cranking the heat, or using fans before switching on the AC, helps too. Think small—those everyday habits make a difference.

6. Downsize What You Don’t Need

Do you really need the bulk pack of everything? If it’s going to sit unused or expire, the answer is probably no. Choosing just enough instead of more than necessary means less clutter, less waste, and more space—both physically and mentally.

7. Cut Out the Clutter (of Time and Stuff)

Are your days filled with obligations that no longer bring you joy? Take a hard look at your schedule and stuff. It’s okay to step away from things that no longer serve your family’s goals or values. Simplifying isn’t just about saving money—it’s about making room for what matters most.

A Simple Life Is a Rich Life

When you choose to live simply, you’re choosing peace over pressure and purpose over perfection. Whether it’s buying less, growing your own food, or spending more time together as a family, every small step adds up.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
