Hello friends, and welcome back to Thrifty Living Friday here on ASW Homestead!
With so much technology at our fingertips, it’s easy for kids to spend hours glued to a screen. While devices have their place for learning and connection, there’s something priceless about unplugging and creating memories together the old-fashioned way. Here on the homestead, we’ve learned that some of the best childhood moments come from simple, low-cost activities—whether it’s playing in the yard, cooking together, or getting creative indoors.
Today, I’m sharing a collection of fun, frugal, and screen-free ideas you can enjoy with your children. Not only will they spark creativity and connection, but they’ll also help you slow down, save money, and savor the season you’re in.
Limiting electronics isn’t about taking away fun — it’s about making space for more of it. When kids step away from their devices, they often:
Move more. Less sitting means more time to run, jump, and explore, helping them stay healthy and strong.
Sleep better. Shutting off bright screens a couple hours before bed helps their bodies rest more deeply.
Focus on learning. Without the constant ping of notifications, it’s easier for kids to dive into schoolwork or discover new hobbies.
Build better relationships. Face-to-face play and conversation teaches important social skills that no app can replace.
Save money. Free and low-cost activities show kids that joy doesn’t have to come with a price tag.

When the weather keeps you inside, you can still keep little hands and imaginations busy:
Make music together. Pull out that old guitar, play the piano, or just have a sing-along in the kitchen.
Get crafty. Keep a basket of supplies — paper, scissors, glue, buttons, fabric scraps — and see what creations they come up with.
Play a board game. Dust off family favorites or teach your kids a classic you played growing up.
Put on a play. Let them create costumes from old clothes and put on a performance for the family.
Cook or bake. Even toddlers can help rinse fruit or tear lettuce. Older kids can measure, mix, and decorate.

Fresh air does wonders for kids — and parents too! Try a few of these ideas:
Go for a family walk. It’s amazing what you notice when you slow down together.
Toss a Frisbee or ball. Simple games keep everyone moving and laughing.
Plant a garden. Even a small container garden can teach patience and care.
Make water play simple. A sprinkler or hose can create an afternoon of giggles.
Visit your library. Ours hosts story times, craft days, and even outdoor events.
Camp out. Whether it’s at a nearby park or your own backyard, set up a tent, roast marshmallows, and tell stories under the stars.

Living with less screen time isn’t about restriction — it’s about connection. It’s giving our kids the chance to discover the joy of building, creating, exploring, and simply being together. As parents, we have the privilege of guiding them toward experiences that will fill their hearts and minds for years to come.
If you’re ready to create more family memories without a single screen, pick one idea from this list and try it this weekend. Then, come back and tell us how it went — we’d love to hear about your own favorite screen-free traditions!

Around here, we’re learning as we go—one season, one project, and one lesson at a time. I’m glad you’re along for the journey.
